The best part about this pack is how adjustable it is. I am 5’1″ and was unable to properly fit any other pack that I tried. The Pathfinder is very easy to adjust for my height and there is no stress on my shoulders when my 9 month old son is in it. It is easy to put on and take off by myself (just read the instruction manual and you don’t even need an elevated surface to do this). I have had my son in it for up to 1.5 hours while we go for walks, go shopping, or do yard work and he loves it. He sits up high in the pack and is able to see everything going on around him. The toy loops are great for attaching toys or pacifiers (to prevent him from throwing them to the ground). I have not had to use the rain hood yet but I am very happy to have it. The day pack attachment is also great as you really can’t carry any other pack or bag when using the carrier. I would definitely recommend the Pathfinder to anyone looking for a child carrier. I can’t wait to get out hiking with it in the spring and summer.

External-frame camping backpacks: External frame camping backpacks use aluminum tubing to distribute the load. They are often easier to pack, and more forgiving if you don’t pack a load evenly. External-frame camping backpacks are also cooler to carry since the frame puts an inch or so of space between your body and the pack. Plus, external-frame camping backpacks are typically less expensive than internal-frame camping backpacks. Because of the price, and the forgiving load distribution, external-frame camping backpacks are excellent for beginning hikers or campers.

Internal-frame camping backpacks: Internal-frame camping backpacks use stays (flat bars, usually of aluminum or plastic) to distribute the load’s weight. Internal-frame camping backpacks are more flexible than external-frame camping packs, making them more ideal for adventurers like skiers and mountain climbers. The internal-frame camping backpack is also more form-fitting. This means that there will be less of a chance that the bag snags on branches or other obstacles as you’re hiking.

Day packs: Day packs, or rucksacks, do not have a frame. The load rests mainly on the shoulders, but some day packs have hip belts to carry some of the load. They are small and light—good for a hike from your base camp, or maybe an overnight camping excursion. They are versatile and are usually less expensive than internal- or external-frame camping backpacks. They are great if you’re car camping and need something for carrying snacks and water during a hike.

Here are some features to think about when buying a camping backpack:

Camping backpack size: Camping bags that are less than 4,000 cubic inches are great for a one- or two-night camping trip. Camping backpacks between 5,000 and 6,000 cubic inches are suited for weeklong camping trips. Remember to buy a camping backpack that’s suited for your kind of backpacking. There’s no sense in getting a bag that is too big, as that’s just extra weight to carry around.

Hip belts: Hip belts are an absolute must for any kind of backpacking. Hip belts distribute some of the bag’s weight to the hips, relieving the shoulders. Hip belts are often padded with foam for more comfort and greater stability.

Detachable pockets: Many camping backpacks have a large top pocket that can be detached to serve as a fanny pack or day pack.

Water bottle holster or hydration pocket: Often camping backpacks come with specialized compartments to keep your water supply easily accessible. Some have large pockets that can accommodate hydration systems.

Determine what you need to know before you go shopping for archery equipment as a gift.

1. Consider the age and level of experience of the archer you are buying the gift for. There are lots of good start-up kits for beginners that won’t be appropriate for an experienced archer. If your recipient already has a bow, maybe you’re better off buying accessories. Do a little snooping if you need to find out.

2. Consider what the bow will be used for. Is the person going to be target shooting, or are they going hunting?

3. Shop for a beginning archer at a major sporting goods store. You can buy good start-up archery kits for kids for around $50. Make sure the kit includes arrows, targets, an arm guard and a form of finger protection. Ask the clerk about these items if they are not in the kit.

4. Check the age limits on the package of a kit. Make sure your recipient fits within those limits. For older archers you may have to buy each item individually (see “How to Buy a Bow” and “How to Outfit for Archery”). Ask the clerk in the store for help.

5. Find out if your experienced archer really needs a new bow. If he does, find out why. What’s wrong with his old bow? You don’t want to repeat a mistake. If he does need a new bow, find out the draw length and draw weight of the old bow (assuming that wasn’t what was wrong with it). Find out what type of site he uses. This will make your shopping a lot easier.

6. Find out what else your experienced archer needs. Maybe all your archer needs is some new equipment. Find out what type of arrows he uses. Does he need an arm guard, a shooting glove, or new targets?

7. Shop for an experienced archer at an archery shop, a gun store or an outdoor outfitter. These types of store are more likely to have high-end archery equipment and hunting supplies. A quality bow, fully equiped, runs around $150 to $250.

8. Look into other hunting gear if your archer is a bowhunter. Check out bow sites, arrowheads, quivers, fishing arrows, camouflage, tree stands or a bow travel case. Ask the store clerk about what sort of bowhunting gimicks are out there – you might be surprised by what they come up with.

9. Talk with the clerk about the features of the bows you look at. For target archery a recurve bow is usually better, but for hunting you more likely want a compound bow. A good compound bow should have an adjustable draw weight.

10. Talk with the people your archer shoots with to find out what he wants or needs. These people will be your very best source of information.

Tips
Does your archer already have somewhere to shoot? If you’re buying someone a bow, make sure you consider this. A range is easy to set up. Some open space and a couple of hay bales is all you really need. Make sure arrows that miss the hay bales won’t fly somewhere they can do damage.

If you don’t know what you need to buy, maybe you’re better off buying a gift certificate to a sporting good store.

Warning
If you live in an urban area, a bow is probably not a good gift for a child. Children want to use their gifts after they open them, and city streets are no place for archery.

Before you begin shopping, you should realistically examine how you plan to use your new bicycle. There are many types, so you’ll want to find one that fits your individual needs.
- Off-roading bicycles: Mountain bikes have the weight and tread you need to move around unpaved areas. They can have tires more than 1.75 inches wide, up to 27 speeds, toe clips to keep your feet on the pedals, and often come with a dense foam seat/saddle that has some stitching to keep you from slipping around while you ride.
- Road racing bicycles: Designed for use on paved roads (opposed to track-racing bikes designed for tracks), road racing bikes are designed for speed. They have a lightweight frame made of aluminum or carbon. Riders usually sit at an incline, crouched toward the handlebars in a streamlined position.
- Tandem bicycles: Great for a day in the park, tandem bikes have enough room for two or more people. Share your pedaling power!
- Unicycles: Show off your amazing balance and astound your friends with a unicycle.
- Hybrid bicycles: Hybrid bikes make great all-purpose bicycles. Hybrids allow riders to sit in a more comfortable upright position than mountain bikes, lightweight frames make them perfect for use on pavement, and they can handle light off-roading on dirt and gravel.
- Comfort cruisers: Comfort bikes have the same sporty look as mountain bikes, but let riders sit more upright for superior comfort. Although they will not go as fast as a hybrid bike or deal with rough terrain as well as a mountain bike, they work great for beginners, commuters, or people who want to take a ride through the park.
- Hanging out: Older kids and teenagers love BMX bikes, which have the look of a motocross dirt bike. They have higher handlebars than road bikes and mountain bikes and the frames look small compared to the rider.
- Kids bicycles: Bikes geared toward younger kids have a small frame and raised handlebars fit a child’s body. They also include a spoke guard and coaster brakes that allow a child to stop when pedaling backwards.
- Nostalgic or retro bicycles: With a banana seat and high handlebars, lowrider bikes are a blast from the past. You can also find vintage bicycles and parts on eBay.
- Recumbent bicycles: Recumbent bikes allow riders to sit in a chair-like seat lower to the ground than traditional elevated seats. Although some people may be taken aback by the unconventional look, recumbent bikes offer riders a comfortable place to sit back and relax.

Not every pitch goes down the middle of the plate. To effectively turn on an inside ball or “go with the pitch” and hit to the opposite field, you’ll need a baseball bat with the proper weight, length, and shape
Baseball bat weight

A player’s age, height, weight, strength, and hitting style determine baseball bat weight. Generally, players in Little League or Youth League should use baseball bats between 16 and 23 ounces. At the high school and collegiate level, baseball bat weights generally range from 27 to 33 ounces

Little League (8-10 yrs)

Player Height

Bat Weight

48 to 50 inches

16 to 17 ounces

51 to 60+ inches

19 to 20 ounces

Youth League (11-12 yrs)

Player Weight

Bat Weight

70 to 80 lbs

18 to 19 ounces

81 to 141+ lbs.

22 to 23 ounces

High School & College

Player Height

Bat Weight

66 to 68 inches

27 to 28 ounces

69 to 77+ inches

30 to 33 ounces

Sellers may list baseball bat weight as a negative number, meaning the bat’s weight equals the bat’s length minus the indicated number. For example, a 32-inch baseball bat with a bat weight of -5 weighs 27 ounces (32 – 5 = 27). Baseball bats used at the high school and college level cannot have more than a -3 ounce weight-to-length ratio.

Heavier baseball bats can generate more power, but reduce bat speed. Lighter baseball bats offer increase speed and control, but reduce pop. The pros often gravitate toward lighter baseball bats which allow a player to make contact with the “fat of a bat” or its “sweet spot” more easily.
Baseball bat length

When standing on end, a baseball bat should come to your waist. Length ranges from 26 to 31 inches for Youth League and 32 to 36 inches for high school, collegiate, and professional players. A Little League baseball bat cannot measure more than 32 inches long.
Baseball bat shape

Look at the shape of a baseball bat, taking its barrel, taper, and grip into consideration.

    *

Barrel: Most barrels, the wide portion of a baseball bat that strikes a ball, measure 2 1/2, 2 5/8, or 2 9/16 inches in diameter. Longer and wider barrels provide a larger sweet spot. Lighter baseball bats have shorter and narrower barrels for increased speed and control.
*

Taper: Taper refers to handle diameter and must fit a player’s hands, allowing a comfortable grip. The taper on most baseball bats is 31/32 of an inch. A narrower taper allows you to rotate your wrists faster and “square up” on pitches more effectively. Little League baseball bats cannot measure more than 2.25 inches in diameter and baseball bats used in high school and college cannot measure more than 2 inches in diameter.
*

Grip: Make sure your metal baseball bat has a proper leather, synthetic leather, or rubber grip. Leather grips will provide the best hold, but do not absorb vibration as effectively as rubber.
